Magi Merlin

Sat. 31 Oct.

Magi Merlin creates music for fellow obsessives, using an avant-garde blend of Pop and “Broken R&B” to explore existential truths through emotionally rich, genre-defying soundscapes.

For years, she has written and co-composed mainly with Funkywhat, developing a shared musical language. Her 2022 EP Gone Girl showcased a voice balancing maximalism and wisdom, leading to a tour with Noga Erez and performances alongside Omar Apollo. In 2025, A Weird Little Dog further expanded her experimental approach and solidified “Broken R&B,” a term she coined to describe her distinctive musical and visual world. She later opened for Nubya Garcia across the U.S., appeared at major festivals, and toured Europe with Yaya Bey. In 2026, she made her acting debut in Mile End Kicks, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and South by Southwest.

Born in Montreal, Magi was raised in a family that encouraged her creativity. Her mother fostered expressive movement through dance, while her father nurtured her storytelling instincts. She developed a deep curiosity for visual arts, research, and music production, building the creative vocabulary needed to realize her artistic vision.

Inspired by Audre Lorde’s belief that emotions are a path to knowledge, her debut album POWER HOUSE embraces the idea that every person contains multitudes. The album encourages listeners to accept all aspects of themselves and recognize that seemingly contradictory qualities can coexist.

Its songs explore themes of identity, insecurity, misogyny, self-compassion, and personal growth. Welcome Home questions self-ownership, SpiceKick examines the link between arrogance and inadequacy, and EAT!ME!OUT! confronts the hypocrisies and sexism embedded in society. Throughout the record, Magi rejects conventional pop structures, using unpredictable vocal and sonic choices to reflect the complexity of self-discovery. WHIP highlights her desire for change while acknowledging that true transformation begins within.

Near the album’s conclusion, Workout critiques beauty standards, while WTVR emphasizes that growth starts with small, everyday steps. Trusting instinct over predetermined outcomes, Magi uses music as a way to move beyond overanalysis and allow thoughts and emotions to flow freely.

Her songs remain intentionally open-ended, reflecting a belief that understanding and growth are never complete. Through her work, Magi explores the relationship between love, transformation, pain, and possibility, creating music that embraces the full complexity of being human.
